An astonishing memoir of military courage at a remote outpost during the Vietnam War—includes a foreword by Joseph L. Galloway, New York Times bestselling coauthor of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young.   In October 1969, William Albracht, the youngest Green Beret captain in Vietnam, took command of a remote hilltop outpost called Firebase Kate held by only 27 American soldiers and 156 Montagnard militiamen. At dawn the next morning, three North Vietnamese Army regiments—some six thousand men—crossed the Cambodian border and attacked.   Outnumbered three dozen to one, Albracht’s men held off the assault but, after five days, Kate’s defenders were out of ammo and water. Refusing to die  or surrender, Albracht led his troops off the hill and on a daring night march through enemy lines.   Abandoned in Hell is an astonishing memoir of leadership, sacrifice, and brutal violence, a riveting journey into Vietnam’s heart of darkness, and a compelling reminder of the transformational power of individual heroism. Not since Lone Survivor and We Were Soldiers Once...and Young has there been such a gripping and authentic account of battlefield courage.   INCLUDES PHOTOS

The best non-fiction books (like this one) are so well written you feel you are there observing the events yourself, vs. books where you feel detached and are simply reading what happened.Unknown to the occupants of newly established Firebase (FB) Kate (and 2 sister FB's) near the Cambodian border—they were not there to provide artillery support for soldiers in the field, but placed there solely to draw a large NVA force out of Cambodia so ARVN could come to the rescue and “destroy” it to demonstrate Nixon’s Vietnamization policy was working. But ARVN never moved from the safe, comfortable confines of their bases, and US commanders were wary of sending US troops, which could result in high enough casualty numbers to trigger a media storm like that associated with “Hamburger Hill.” Evidently, because the majority of personnel on Kate were CIDG with a small number (27) of US personnel, they were considered expendable, leaving the contingent of less than 200 to face thousands of NVA surrounding them, who were intent on over-running the base and killing all of them. Only hours after the new Special Forces commander arrived, and before his directions for establishing adequate defenses could be implemented, the battle began, knocking out 2 of the 3 artillery pieces on Kate almost immediately. The co-author who commanded FB Kate as a Special Forces Captain recounts the harrowing ordeal (along with those of other survivors and supporting USAF fixed wing and USA helicopter crews) to fend off multiple NVA assaults amid almost incessant bombardment from mortars, RPGs, artillery firing from across the border, and other weaponry. Ultimately, with their own artillery knocked out, helicopter support scaled back to almost nothing due to their losses and damage, mounting casualties with no replacements or reinforcements coming, little ammo and water remaining, and knowing they could not sustain another assault—the Captain (himself wounded) makes the only logical choice remaining—leave the hellhole (against orders if necessary) on foot during the night and hope somehow they can evade the NVA and link up with a relatively small Special Forces-led mobile strike (MIKE) force to lead them to safety. But unknown to Kate occupants, the MIKE force has become bogged down miles away by overwhelming numbers of NVA. And while waiting on a USAF Spooky gunship to support their night escape, mechanical problems significantly delays its arrival. As the NVA begins its final assault, the survivors can no longer wait on air support, and head out into the darkness for whatever awaits them. The authors do a great job of humanizing those involved and recognize (often by name) courage and selflessness where it is due, as well as the ineptitude, gutlessness, and failures of others, including those on Kate and up the chain. The book doesn't include crafted or manufactured drama or other embellishments designed to generate reader excitement. No embellishments are needed. The book is well researched (inc. official documents on both sides), well written and organized, and is not simply the personal reminiscences of an individual. As a reader, I found the experiences of privations, futility, anger, hopelessness, desperation, terror, loss of composure, and gory details as recounted by the survivors palpable. Aside from the days-long battle itself, I also appreciated the insights on the tactics, strategies, and policies of the opposing forces, the application and capabilities of the weaponry and equipment involved, and the calling out of the idiocy of officers (US and ARVN) and politicos up the chain making decisions based on what was best for their careers. These true events could easily have been made into a successful film on par with “We Were Soldiers” and “Hamburger Hill.”
