I live in San Francisco and all my life never really knew anything about or understood Luther Burbank's legacy to horticulture. This is a very good, comprehensive and well-written account about what others here have called a quirky individual. And, yes, you finish the book trying to get a solid impression of him, but he is still an enigma. I suspect there might have been material that wasn't published, but it doesn't matter. The really interesting stuff, like his desire for copyright protection under patent law for hybridized plants, and his somewhat outside the margins interest in eugenics (of a sort), his animistic beliefs that seemed to contradict his stance against religion and God, and all of his varied friends and associates who followed him as if he were the Second Coming. All very interesting. I would recommend the book if only for the very effective and clear writing style.
